On 25 January this year, it was Virginia Woolf's birth's 130th anniversary: a good opportunity to remember this amazing woman who had big influence on latter writers, feminist-winged leaders, artists in general and women in particular.

'Elizabeth wondered whether Miss Kilman could be hungry. Lo estamos pasando muy bien en Italia. VARGAS LLOSA, ¡ENHORABUENA!

En primavera había estrenado la mayoría de edad, acababa de terminar mi primer curso en la universidad y ese verano iba a saborear mis 18 añitos practicando el poco Inglés que sabía en una localidad costera del sur de Inglaterra famosa por dos cosas: haber sido el nidito de amor de algún rey inglés y su amante, cuya relación se facilitó con la construcción del "exótico" ROYAL PAVILLION y haberse convertido, muchos años después, en una ciudad famosa por su ambiente nocturno "gay". El Brighton que conocí en el año 1985 compartía con la ciudad de la que salí -Donostia-San Sebastián- cierto aire decadente, como de haber conocido tiempos de mayor lustre y vivir un poco de "rentas". Cierto aire, también, de lugar de peregrinaje playero, en especial de juventud ociosa, el necesario contrapunto de "júbilo adolescente", eso sí, más variado y multicolor que la clásica foto de naúticos, LACOSTE y VESPA-último modelo que ofrecían los cachorros de la alta burguesía donostiarra. Me costó tiempo descubrir las "diversiones" que ocultaba otra típica ciudad veraniega (baños matutinos en el mar, a pesar de las piedras, paseos vespertinos por los LANES, admirando escaparates de tentaciones inaccesibles para una estudiante, el primer TODO A CIEN que vi en mi vida, conversaciones imposibles con italianos, suizos y alemanes, a veces estupendos, risas inagotables con los concursos de discoteca por la noche, sobre todo cuando se apuntaba algún japonés despistado y generalmente salido... FAST FOOD a cualquier hora, era lo único que podía costearme para contrarrestar la pésima dieta de mi "landlady"). Antes de conocer bien la ciudad y disfrutar de la experiencia impagable de andar sola por el mundo, sin padres, pasé un tiempo de "aclimatación" de unos 10 días en los que me sentía sola, en una tierra extraña, sin poder emitir palabra (el primer día de clase había conocido dos chicas con las que salía todos los días, pero su nivel de Inglés era infinitamente superior al mío y me limitaba a escucharlas para aprender). En esos 10 días en los que la nostalgia acechaba cada tarde, al volver a casa tras una jornada escolar, VARGAS LLOSA fue mi compañero fiel: en cuanto subía al autobús que me devolvía a una semi-adosada de GRAHAM CRESCENT, sólo pensaba en aislarme en mi habitación al llegar y seguir leyendo esa maravilla titulada CONVERSACIÓN EN LA CATEDRAL. Cualquier lector sabe lo que es el "placer" de la lectura, una oportunidad de evasión de la realidad como tantas otras. Pero en mi caso, Mario Vargas Llosa y ese título, el primero que leí de él, están vinculados a una experiencia personal de "desapego" que los convierte en algo muy especial. Aquellas horas de entrega a las vidas de Santiago y Ambrosio y al entramado político peruano, en la soledad de una habitación ajena, tenían algo de "íntimo" que sobrepasaba la habitual privacidad ligada al acto. Su prosa prolija, un poco enrevesada al principio, un poco directa después, poderosa, tuvo un efecto beneficioso sobre mi persona: al leerla me olvidaba que estaba lejos de todo lo que había conocido hasta entonces, de todo lo que amaba. Luego vinieron otros VARGAS LLOSA ("Pantaleón y las visitadoras", "La casa verde", "Historia de Mayta"), pero ninguno de ellos me emocionó tanto, ninguno de ellos ya fue una cura para mí. Cualquiera que haya leído ese primer título y algún otro sabe que este peruano merece el NOBEL por derecho propio, porque es uno de los grandes, pero yo me alegro por ti, Mario, y celebro este premio porque, en cierto sentido, formas parte de mí. No siempre me han convencido tus opiniones, a pesar de que construyes argumentos sólidos como pocos lo hacen ya hoy en día; no siempre he estado de acuerdo con tus análisis políticos, pero confieso que alguna vez he corrido a comprar algún libro tras leer una de tus reseñas o críticas. Cualquier recomendación literaria que puedas hacer siempre merecerá la pena, tal es la pasión que transmites, tanto si son autores respetados como si son de los considerados menores. Gracias por todo y ¡ENHORABUENA!

HANNOVER & SEHNDE on my own

I enjoyed myself in Hannover very much by visiting the places we are going to spot in September: THE GREAT ZOO, where I was able to be the nearest the hippos I'd ever been, to watch a polar bear just from down under its territory and even to "stroke" flamingos; the AUTOSTADT or some sort of "the town of cars", a place which brought some beautiful & old souvenirs into my mind when watching some also beautiful & old car models; HANNOVER'S magnificent TOWN HALL , at the top of which you can capture the most impressive views of Hannover & surroundings -remember this! you won't want to miss the opportunity to use the lift up to the tower once & again, it's almost like to get trapped inside a Hitchcock film. I also had a wonderful time being able to "live" the lively atmosphere created by German football supporters at the 2010 World Cup and I found myself some sort of really-lucky-witness when I came up with the opportunity of sharing the match Spain vs Germany at a German home where there were two couples of German-she-Spanish-he and their "Gerpanish" children. There are so many places that come to my mind when I close my eyes and think of my German stay that I could get you bored with the list: Marktkirche, the only church that stood up after the massive destruction of the city during II World War, Hauptbanhoff, a certainly "peculiar" railway station, where you can stroll around for shopping or for a lunch with friends as it is plenty of both, shops and "restaurants" and so on... Maschsee lake, an artificial lake made by the citizens of Hannover "obliged" by the nazis, the Nanas, some modern sculptures that have become an emblematic symbol of the city, Podbielskistrasse, a very long street that I ran up and down every day anytime I wanted to go anywhere in Hannover... Well, to finish with I must say that German people were very kind to me, that I also liked it strongly the beautiful surroundings of Sehnde with those picturesque farms and those "seas" of flat land and green grass, etc.etc.etc.

Gustatuko litzaidake eskerrak ematea jende askori AMA GUADALUPEKOAN egiten den egun batzutako lehenengo elkartrukea antolatzeko aukera emateagatik. Lehendabizi, mila esker Eneko eta Pachori, benetazkoa, hain lagungarri izateagatik. Hasieran, elkartruke hau aurrera eramatea erabaki ondoren, laguntza eskatu nizuen eta beti prest izandu zaituztet (ze ondo geratzen zaizkizun POWER-POINTak eta ze ondo konpontzen zara bidai-agentzietakoekin, Pacho! eta ze ondo daramatzazun elkarrizketa eta negoziazio latzak, Eneko!). Batez ere bioi mila esker zuen fedeagatik, bai AMA GUADALUPEKOAn, bai elkartrueetan, bai niregan. Espero dut talde finkoa osatu izatea, zuek oraindik beste elkartrukeak eskuetan dituzuela eta...

Mila esker ere, noski, Mertxeri, hasierako "cautela" pittin hori aldentzeagatik eta azkenean, zure denbora baliotsua gastatuz, elkartrukean parte aktiboa hartzeagatik. Ainhoari, "lehenengo harria" jartzeagatik orain dela urte batzu (SKYPE eta FACEBOOK etab. existitzen ez ziren urteetan, hain zuzen ere) Finlandiako irakasle batekin harremanetan jarriz. José Carlosi, bere indar eta baliabide guztiekin elkartruke baten proiektua sustatzeagatik. Juan Carlosi, Alemaniako irakasleak pintxoak hartzera gonbidatzeagatik. Anari, hain ausarta izateagatik -zeuk bakarrik bi egun osoak salbatu zenizkigun, ez da gauza ahaztekoa, ez! José Ángeli, hainbestetan ni animatzeagatik... Maritxuri, POSTIGU nekazal etxearen jabe maitagarri horri, hain jatorra izateagatik. Itsasori, askotan nire "malkoak" jasateagatik pazientzia handiarekin... Beleni, behin-behineko itzultzailea bihurtzeagatik. Idoiari, Informatikarekiko laguntza eskeintzeagatik behin eta berriro. Karmeleri, edozein momentutan eskua luzatzeko prest egoteagatik.

Eta, nola ez! onena, azkena. Batez ere eskertu nahi dizuet zuei, nire 1.go BATXILERGOKO Inglesako ikasleok (batzu ere Lenguakook). Oso ondo pasatu dugu elkarrekin askotan, klasean bertan eta klasetik kanpo (eta oso gaizki ere bai...) eta elkartrukean partehartzaileei oraindik Alemaniakoa geratzen zaizkigu, baina dagoeneko esan dezaket nire bihotza bete duzuela zuen itxaropenarekin - eta zuen itxaropenik ezarekin batzutan-, zuen irrifarrekin, zuen haserre eta umekeriekin, zuen pozakin eta, batez ere, zuen konfidantzarekin. Ez dut nahi izenak jarri beti baten bat ahazteko arriskua korritzen duzulako holakoetan. Baina noizean behin gogoratzen dut Iraia eta Anaren kemena, Mónicaren irrifarra, Ainhoaren insistentzia, Paula, Naiara, Sara etab., koadrilatxoaren buila eta algara (eta bereziki, Miriam-en besarkada goxoak), Enara eta Iratiren ezagüera zabala Hondarribiari buruz, beraien indarra, etab. etab. LA ÚLTIMA ESTACIÓN

La semana pasada vi una película en el cine que me gustó bastante y que creo que puede ser ilustrativa, para mis alumnos de 4º de la ESO, de hasta qué punto cambió el tejido social en el siglo XIX, con el surgimiento de la "conciencia de clase", las revoluciones burguesas y el germen ideológico de lo que luego se conoció como "proletariado". La película cuenta los últimos días de la vida de Tólstoi, el gran escritor ruso mundialmente conocido por "Guerra y Paz". El escritor pensaba que todos sus bienes - incluídos los derechos de autor sobre sus obras- debían ser patrimonio de todo el pueblo ruso. Su mujer, sin embargo, se oponía a semejante idea de naturaleza quijotesca. Independientemente de lo que cuenta, la película se deja ver, está magníficamente interpretada por Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren y James McAvoy y exhibe, en algunos de sus fotogramas, la grandiosa belleza de la patria rusa. Una aportación interesante para cuando trabajamos el contexto histórico del Realismo y Naturalismo.

AMA GUADALUPEKOA-KGS SEHNDE EXCHANGE 2010

GERMANS IN AMA!!!:Being -as I have, for almost 19 years- the eldest English teacher in Ama Guadalupekoa, it's been a delightful privilege for me to be able to get (at last! ) a steady contact with a German teacher working at a Secondary School in Sehnde, a small town about 20 kms. away from Hannover, Germany. This is something very special for me as my job, for the last few years, has been turning into taking up more Spanish lessons. But thanks to that "relationship" I've managed to make it possible to put some students of AMA in real contact with some German peers, apart from opening a new "age" in this school, where there had already been other exchanges thanks to Mertxe -our French teacher and also current headmistress -, but these hadn't been longer than a day's.

As I realised this exchange is also being very special for my students in 1º BACH. I decided to publish something here in my blog, for anyone being interested in the experience to have the possibility to read this.

Our long time wished dream became true on the very first day of May, a Saturday in which a group of students of AMA gathered, at 11:00, in Bilbao's airport. The previous weeks - well, to be honest, the previous months- had been nerve-racking for me, as my students couldn't believe me (didn't want to???) when I first told them about the project - other attempts of exchanges with different schools in Sweden, Canada and the States hadn't progressed enough to become real-. This skepticism flew over all the decisions to be made. Every time I informed my students about progress in the project (= agreements on most suitable dates for both schools, on money spent during Germans' stay, on less Germans coming, heartbreaking selection of participants...), they made me a lot of further questioning through which they tried to suggest this project of exchange would end up, again, just as another attempt, if not a fail... My English lessons in 1º BACH. had become some sort of "why I still haven't received any news from Germany-5 minute-introduction to class" routine. Oh, my God! Teen students can be persistent when the time comes to complain!

Anyway, after that Saturday 1st May 2010 when Germans arrived in Hondarribia, a lot of things happened during this first half of the exchange, some of them unexpected for everybody, some of them better than expected. During that first weekend I spent the two days showing Heidi and Gabriele around (they both got amazed at Hondarribia's beauty and had a great time tasting some "pintxos" in Donostia's old part). The "a bit threatening" rain appeared on that Sunday and hardly vanished when their stay finished. It accompanied us when we headed towards Murillo de Gállego, in Huesca, for our students to practise both, canoeing and rafting, thanks to Ana's, our Ph.E. teacher's, enthusiasm. The two classes of 1º BACH and our German exchange-mates proved their abilities to take risks, facing rain and cold when canoeing across the "barranco de Formiga" and bearing both, a strong wind and a freezing temperature when rafting. Torben, a German "quiet man" in his 16s had to be taken to hospital as he got injured in Formiga. This wouldn't turn out to be the only hospital that my own exchange-mate, Gabriele (or "Frau Pape", as their students headed to her) , would visit in my company. Thanks God, Torben was finally seen by a doctor after about 3 hours of having had his shoulder come off. I especially remember my conversation with Nerea that night, at the hospital's waiting room. I liked it. On Friday 7th May Gabriele and I, we had to get Marvin a lift to the "Hospital Comarcal" de Irún. Our students in AMA had invited their German peers to train football and this "sweet eyed" boy got injured himself in his ankle. These two German boys will remain in my mind because due to their unluck I became like a pilgrim (but instead of visiting churches, I placed my ass in hospitals' "most-comfortable-ever" waiting room's seats). But I also remember the only two girls in the group, Anna and Laura, always so nice and polite, not grumbling when I approached them with my camera or I tortured them in class with Spanish "refranes"; Jan-Nicklas, friendly to everybody , Dennis, cheerful and a bit naughty, Lennart, whose Spanish was just "perfect", Daniel, with that "hint of mistery" in his eyes, and Kai, always serious to me. Everybody in our school smiled at their sight on a Wednesday, 5th May, especially when they were taken "up, up, upstairs" to the "frontón" where they tried their best playing "pelota vasca" with our students.
